CranioSacral Therapy CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a form of very gentle bodywork that is used to facilitate the flow of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and spinal cord. Cerebrospinal fluid is created in the brain and bathes the delicate tissues of the brain and spinal cord, nourishing them and removing wastes. It flows with a rhythm all its own, unrelated to the heartbeat or respiratory rhythm. It is possible for this flow of cerebrospinal fluid to be slowed or constricted due to injury or stress to any part of the body. Any imbalance or restriction in this flow can cause a wide variety of health problems because it is so crucial to the proper functioning of the brain and nervous system. CranioSacral Therapy was adapted and refined from cranial osteopathy by Dr. John Upledger, an osteopathic physician. His institute, The Upledger Institute, located in Florida, is very well respected by the medical community and is conducting ongoing research in the effectiveness of this gentle therapy. It also has an excellent training program for practitioners. During a CranioSacral Therapy session, the client stays clothed and relaxes on a massage table. The practitioner uses very gentle holds on the sacrum, torso, and head, which allow the client's own body to release any blockages to the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid and return their systems to balance. These holds also help release stored tension in the fascia of the body. Clients leave the session, which lasts for about an hour, feeling very relaxed and balanced. This is a very effective technique for addressing a wide variety of health concerns including acute and chronic illnesses, chronic pain, neurological disorders, effects of trauma (physical and emotional), hyperactivity, learning disorders, tension, sinus problems, migraines, TMJ syndrome, digestive problems, and fibromyalgia. It is also excellent for enhancing the functioning of the immune system for general wellness. Written by Sue Coughtry, Licensed Massage Therapist and CranioSacral Therapist.
